4. The language of flowers

I've been back from London for almost a week, my heart torn to pieces. I haven't heard anything from Gabriel, aside from one meagre text.

[You should have trusted me.]

I've read and reread this message a hundred times since he sent it to me, the day after our clash over Iris. It's idiotic, but every time I pull it up on the screen of my smartphone, I expect to find something new. A sign. Proof that he still loves me. That he won't leave me forever. That he forgives me for my betrayal. But these five words remain the same and their meaning is far from reassuring.

I tried calling him. I left him pleading, passionate, explosive messages. I badly want him to understand, I want him to try and put himself in my shoes. The man I love is running after the ex-woman of his life: I have to do all I can to not succumb to jealousy, to the fear of being replaced, rejected, forgotten. But his son deserves to find his mother. Gabriel was right. When I lied to him, I involuntarily hurt Virgile. And because of that I'm not sure that Diamonds will ever forgive me.

I leave the subway and immediately feel a vibration in my jeans pocket. Heading towards the office, I listen to my voicemail. Marion's loud voice forces me to hold the phone away from my ear, but I take note that she's coming to meet me at one o'clock for lunch break. And my best friend concludes:

“I have a few things to tell you, Am. And you need to tell me what's going on with my boyfriend – you know, Ferdinand!”

Beauregard's kind and compassionate face comes back to mind. I haven't seen him since that nightmarish night, when he acted like a true gentleman. Like a true friend. He didn't come back to Paris with Marcus and me, he stayed in London to sign a few new contracts and buy a pied-à-terre in the heart of the City.

It's so tough being a millionaire.

He'll be back tomorrow and I have absolutely no idea what to expect. Are things going to be different, or is he going to act like nothing changed? This business trip brought us closer, and I don't see my boss in the same light any more. Is it the same for him?

9 o'clock. I just shared a café macchiato with my favourite coworker and listened to him complain about everything and nothing. His ex is squatting in his flat and refuses to leave.
